After being dropped from the ODI World Cup, Jemima made a determined comeback and hit a winning four against Pakistan
The Women’s T20 World Cup started as expected for the Indian team. The Indian team came into the field to start their campaign against Pakistan and won the match by 7 wickets. Jemima Rodríguez’s contribution was the most important in India’s victory. Jemima scored a crucial run in the last overs, scoring a half-century for the team. This innings is also special for Jemima as she did not get a place in the ODI World Cup last year in New Zealand. However, she proved her worth in the T20 World Cup.
Jemimah Rodrigues was not part of the Indian squad in last year’s Women’s ODI World Cup. Not getting a place in the team was also a shock for her. In the five ODIs she played in 2021, she failed to score 10 runs once. However, even after not getting a place in the World Cup, she did not give up and started preparing with renewed vigour. She played cricket matches with 14-year-old players in Mumbai before making her comeback to the team.
Talking about her comeback to the team, Jemima Rodriguez said, “After being out of the team, I went to Prashant Shetty and we made a plan. I had to play two matches in a week and practice after that. Sunday was a holiday for practice. Meanwhile I gave myself a challenge. I was on a flat wicket (a pitch suitable for fast bowling) on a turning track (a pitch suitable for spin bowling). Played matches with Under 14 and Under 19 boys at Azad Maidan, Mumbai. Due to the dew on the pitch in the morning, the ball would swing a lot and as the day progressed, the ball would start to take turns. This practice improved my game.”
Jemima scored 53 runs off 38 balls in the match played against Pakistan on Sunday (February 12). After the match, Jemima said, “I don’t know what to say. I knew that if I stayed on the pitch until the end, we would win. This game was special for me too. For a long time, I did not get runs from my bat. I would like to dedicate this game to my parents. Both of them are in the stadium, this game is for them.”
Meanwhile, considering the overall match between the two teams, India elected to bat first after losing the toss. Pakistan scored 149 for 4 in limited 20 overs. In reply, India achieved this target with the loss of three wickets in 19 overs. The Indian team is scheduled to play their second match of the World Cup against the West Indies on February 15. Along with Rohit, these three Indians made the sweat of the opposition bowlers on their Test debut, a veteran is also in the list
