Ajinkya was made the vice-captain again, the veteran Mumbaikar’s displeasure! Other options suggested
The Indian cricket team will go on a tour of West Indies in the month of July. India’s Test ODI squad for this tour was announced on Friday (June 23). Rohit Sharma has retained the responsibility as the captain of the Test team. However, veteran Ajinkya Rahane, who has returned from the World Test Championship, has once again been given the vice-captaincy of the team. While Rahane has been praised by many after being given the responsibility, former India captain and all-time great batsman Sunil Gavaskar has criticized the selection committee’s decision.
He scored 89 in the first innings and 46 in the second innings of the final of the World Test Championship while returning to the Indian team after a year and a half. After that, coach Rahul Dravid said that he can once again become a regular member of the Indian Test team. After that, he was directly made the vice-captain of the team. Gavaskar did not agree with this decision of the selection committee. He said,
“I don’t know what the selection committee has proved by making Ajinkya the vice-captain of the Test team once again. If you ask me, a young player should have got that position. Shubman Gill and Akshar Patel are good options for that.”
Gill has confirmed his place in the Indian team as an opener. He is also considered as the future captain of India. On the other hand, Akshar’s place in the Indian team for Test matches abroad is not guaranteed.
