Anderson ready to break Shane Warne’s Test record! Only ‘so many’ wickets are wanted

A two-match Test series is currently underway between New Zealand and England. England won the first match of the series and the second match started on Friday (February 24). England fast bowler James Anderson is seen bowling in the first innings of the ongoing second Test in Wellington. On the second day of the match, Anderson took three wickets and took another step towards breaking the biggest record in the history of Test cricket.

New Zealand won the toss and bowled first in the Wellington Test. Batting first, England scored 315 for three by the end of the first day’s play. The next day, England scored 435 for 8 and declared the innings. In reply, however, the New Zealand batsmen lost wickets cheaply in quick succession. James Anderson and spinner Jack Leach have taken three wickets each. Before the end of the second day’s play, the host New Zealand team scored 138 for 7. The 40-year-old Anderson can soon break the record of former Australian legend Shane Warne.

After Saturday’s game, Anderson’s tally reached 685 Test wickets. Anderson can soon become the third bowler to cross the 700-wicket mark in this format. He can also become the second highest Test wicket taker in the near future. Shane Warne is second on the list with 708 Test wickets. Anderson still needs 24 wickets to break Warne’s record. Anderson can perform this feat while playing the Ashes series in the coming month of June. Sri Lankan legend Muthaiya Muralidharan tops the list with 800 Test wickets. Breaking Muralitharan’s record is tough for Anderon, but he can surely break Warne’s record in the coming matches.

James Anderson made his Test debut for England in 2003. He will soon complete his 20 years in Test cricket. He has so far played 179 Tests for England, taking 685 wickets at an average of 25.88. He has taken 5-wicket hauls 32 times in the Test format. He has taken 10 or more wickets in three Test matches. In the latest ICC Test rankings, Anderson has overtaken Pat Cummins to claim the number one spot. (James Anderson may soon overtake Shane Warne for most Test wickets)
