Ashwin sad that he could not become a Test captain! Overthinker’s tag followed the name
India had to accept defeat in the Test series in South Africa tour last year. After that, Virat Kohli stepped down as the captain of the Test team. Rohit Sharma became the Test captain after Virat suddenly gave BCCI this blow. Rohit is currently captaining India in all three forms of cricket. But Ravichandran Ashwin’s desire for Test captaincy seems to have remained unfulfilled. Ashwin spoke about this in a recent interview.
After Virat Kohli, the names of Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant were discussed for the post of Test captain. But the name of legendary spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was also discussed to some extent. Ashwin expressed his displeasure at being benched in the final of the recently concluded World Test Championship. In the same interview, he also explained the reason for not getting the captaincy of the Test team.
In an interview with The Indian Express, Ashwin said, “Many people have formed an opinion about me that I think too much. But I think a player who plays 15-20 matches in a row doesn’t need to think much. But if one is going to get a chance in only two matches, one may have to think more. If someone said to me, 15 matches to play and you’d be on your toes. You will be responsible for the team players. If you lead the team, I won’t think too much. Why should I think more of you guys?”
“It is wrong to say that he thinks more of someone than he does. Because everyone’s journey in life is his own. So it is wrong for anyone else to comment on it.” Has anyone been put off by being known as an overthinker? To this question, Ashwin said, “This tag was created to be used against me. Is this correct? When the discussion of leadership reached me, some used the same tag against me. Some said that my name is not on the first list for leadership.”
Ashwin is currently third in the list of highest wicket takers for India. Anik Kumble, who is number one in the list, has taken 953 international wickets. Second is Harbhajan Singh, who has taken 707 wickets in international cricket. Third is Ashwin, who has taken 697 wickets. Ashwin may soon surpass Harbhajan in this list. (Ravichandran Ashwin could not become Test captain due to this reason. The spinner himself has given the reason)
