Asia Cup 2023: PCB chief reacts to hybrid model, video goes viral

Pakistan Cricket Board President Najam Sethi has thanked the Asian Cricket Council for accepting their hybrid model for the Asia Cup 2023. He has uploaded a video in this regard. The Asia Cup will be played from August 31 to September 17. A total of 13 ODI matches will be played in this tournament. So, 9 of those matches will be played in Sri Lanka and 4 matches will be played in Pakistan. Earlier this tournament was hosted by Pakistan but India refused to send its team to the neighboring country. For the first time since 2008, the matches of the multinational cricket tournament will be held in Pakistan. Fifteen years ago, the Asia Cup tournament was organized in Pakistan in which 6 teams participated.

On hosting the 4 matches of the Asia Cup, Najam Sethi said, “We are delighted that the ACC has accepted our hybrid model for the Asia Cup 2023. This means that the PCB will host the event and Sri Lanka will remain as a neutral venue, which was necessitated by the Indian cricket team’s inability to travel to Pakistan.”

The PCB chief said, “Our ardent fans would have liked to see the Indian Cricket Team play in Pakistan for the first time in 15 years, but we understand the role of the BCCI. Like the PCB, the BCCI also needs the government’s permission before crossing the border.”

Sethi said, “In this backdrop, the hybrid model was the best solution and that is why I strongly advocated it. The adoption of the hybrid model means that the program will run together with the ACC, as originally planned.”

He added, “In the last 15 months, PCB has organized high-profile bilateral series as well as two hugely successful Pakistan Super League events. In which some of the world’s leading cricketers participated and enjoyed Pakistan’s excellent facilities and phenomenal hospitality. We look forward to providing a similar experience to the teams participating in the ACC Asia Cup, starting with the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan in February/March 2025.”

Pakistan matches will be played in Lahore while Sri Lanka matches will be played in Kandy and Pallekele. With the approval of the schedule of the Asia Cup, the arrival of the Pakistan team in the ODI World Cup to be held in October-November has also been confirmed. Both the teams can play in the league round on October 15 in Ahmedabad.
