Australia 281 runs away from first Ashes victory, English bowling decisive in last innings

Australia have been given a target of 281 runs to win the first match of Ashes 2023. In the second innings of the Edgbaston Test, England were bundled out for 273 runs. None of England’s batsmen could score a half-century in this innings. On the other hand, captain Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon took four wickets each for Australia.

In the first innings, England team was ahead of Australia by 7 runs. But in the second innings, the performance of the Australian bowlers was seen to improve. Four wickets each from Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon () were instrumental in England reeling off a low score. Josh Hazlewood and Scott Boland also took one wicket each. Joe Root and Harry Brooke played the best innings for England. Lions took the wickets of both at 46-46 runs each. England captain Ben Stokes () was also seen in his rhythm. But he also fell prey to Pat Cummins after scoring 43 runs.

Australia have the last innings of the fourth day and the entire fifth day to win the match. If the Australian batsmen hold on to the pitch, the target of 281 can be achieved. But the performance of England’s veteran duo James Anderson and Stuart Broad will also be decisive.
