Australia broke England’s ‘baseball’ bubble! Thrilling win in Edgbaston Test

The historic Ashes series began on Wednesday (June 16). The first match of the Ashes 2023 was played at the Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham. Australia defeated England on the last day of the match i.e. Tuesday (June 20). This match between the two teams turned out to be an exciting treat for the fans. Both the teams were trying to win till the last ball. But eventually Australia won. Pat Cummins played a fitting captaincy and won by two wickets.

In the last innings, Australia had a target of 281 runs to win. By the end of the fourth day’s play, Australia had scored 107 for 3. On the final day they needed a total of 174 runs to win. The target was not big for Australia on the final day. However, rains intervened in time and the first session of the last day had to be canceled completely. After the rain stopped, both teams entered the field directly after having lunch. Australia’s score at the end of the second session was 183 for 5. Usman Khawaja was showing a restrained game on the pitch. But then Khawaja also lost his wicket and the match seemed to slip away from Australia’s hands. But that’s how Pat Cummins stayed on the pitch for the team.

Usman Khawaja top-scored for Australia in the second innings as well as in the first innings. This time he was able to score 65 runs off 197 balls. It can be said that the role of Khawaja and Cummins remained the most important in Australia’s victory. Pacer Cummins stayed on the pitch in the last overs of the match and led the team to victory. Cummins scored 44 off 73 balls.

Overall, England won the toss and elected to bat first. In the first innings, England scored 393 for 8 and declared the innings. In reply, the Australian team reached 386 runs. After England took a 7-run lead in the first innings, they were bowled out for 273 in the second innings. Australia’s last innings target of 281 runs was reached in 92.3 overs.
