What does the rule say?
A substitute player cannot bat or bowl in cricket. Also, he cannot lead. A substitute player may keep wicket as per Rule 24.1.2 of the MCC. However, the permission of the on-field umpire has to be taken for this. A player outside the playing eleven can only bat or bowl as a concussion substitute.
