Sarfraz Khan, the explosive batsman who has scored runs in domestic cricket, is currently in the news. The BCCI recently announced India’s Test and ODI squads for the West Indies tour on Friday (June 23). Sarfaraz was not given a place in this. Rituraj Gaikwad, who averaged nearly 42 in first-class cricket, was selected. However, Sarfraz, who scored 2466 runs in the last three seasons of the Ranji Trophy, was overlooked. This is raising questions on the selectors. However, an official related to BCCI has made a big statement about Sarfaraz.
What did the authorities say?
An official associated with the BCCI said on condition of confidentiality, “Such a reaction of displeasure is understandable, but I can tell you that cricket is not the only reason behind the constant neglect of Sarfraz. There are many reasons why he is not being selected.”
He asked, “Don’t the selectors understand why they would ignore a player who has scored more than 900 runs in 2 consecutive seasons? The biggest reason for not being selected in the squad is his fitness, which is not suitable for the international level.” Speaking further, he said, “Sarfraz will have to work hard on this and come back with good fitness after reducing his weight. Batting fitness is not the only criterion for selection.”
According to a BCCI official, apart from fitness, Sarfraz’s behavior on and off the field is not up to the standards of discipline. “His behavior on and off the field has not been top notch,” he said. Some of his things have not been good in terms of discipline. Hopefully, Sarfraz will work on these with his father and coach Naushad Khan.”
It is being said that Sarfaraz celebrated aggressively after scoring a century against Delhi in the Ranji match against Delhi this year. His celebration did not go down well with the selectors. At that time, the then head of the selection committee, Chetan Sharma, was present at the stadium. Earlier, his behavior during the 2022 Ranji Trophy final had also angered Madhya Pradesh coach and former Mumbai legend Chandrakant Pandit.
Sarfaraz Khan has played 37 matches in first class cricket in his career. He has scored at an average of 79.65. His statistics are certainly remarkable, but after the BCCI official’s statement, the discussion has been sparked everywhere.
