Army up-and-comer Salman Khan and comebacker Dattu Bhokanal put on a brilliant performance to reach the finals of the 24th Open Sailing National Championships in the single sculls event. The tournament, which was held on the international track of CME, saw a close battle between the open-group Army and Army players. However, Salman and Dattu grabbed attention with their performances.
Born in Haryana, the 6ft 5in tall Salman clocked 1 minute 40.8 seconds to reach the final of the 500m race. He will face the challenge of 2018 Rio Olympian Dattu Bhokanal in the final round. Dattu clocked the best time in the semi-finals to reach the final. Dutti gave a time of 1 minute 31.7 seconds. Dattu edged past Tokyo Olympian Arvind Singh (1 minute 32.7 seconds).
As the session of the competition was prolonged, the Senadal team entered the finals of single sculls, coxless four, double sculls till the last moment. Olympians Arjun Lal Jat and Ajay Tyagi’s performance in double sculls should be watched. He clocked 1 minute 29.1 seconds. In the women’s division, Kerala, Manipur, Haryana reached the finals in three categories each.
Maharashtra had good success in open category. Dattu reached the final with a fast performance. Tejash Shinde-Omkar Mhaske took the pole position in the coxless event. In the second semi-final match of this group, the pair of Punit Kumar-Ashish clocked 1 minute 31.2 seconds.
In the women’s section, two pairs from Maharashtra, ranked second, reached the semi-finals. Mrmani Salgaonkar clocked 1 minute 52.7 seconds in single sculls. Kiran Devi of Uttar Pradesh remained in the lead with a time of 1 minute 51.5 seconds. In the coxless pair, Komal Bodkare and Bhagyashree Chavan entered the final with a time of 1 minute 50.7 seconds. The Kerala duo of Devpriya and Arundhati YJ reached the final with the top spot.
