Now after five years of retirement, he has made a shocking revelation about this. He has said that the team atmosphere was the biggest problem at that time.

In an interview, when asked about his retirement, de Villiers said, “At the time, the atmosphere in the team was the biggest problem for me. With the retirement of fellow players like Boucher, Smith and Ja Kallis, suddenly there was no one there for me. I didn’t have that setup, which was needed the most.”

Speaking further, de Villiers said, “I had a lot of responsibility to run things. Which I thought was very good. However, you need a group of four to five people who understand these things. There was no such atmosphere in the team at that time. Some members of the team were very private, and some were not. However, I thought this is the best time to retire.”

De Villiers’ career
De Villiers has played 114 Tests, 228 ODIs and 78 T20Is for South Africa. He has a total of more than 20 thousand runs in international cricket. De Villiers has scored 22 centuries and 8765 runs at an average of 50.66 in Tests. Also, he has also scored 2 double centuries in Tests. He has scored 25 centuries and 9577 runs at an average of 53.5 in ODIs. Additionally, he has scored 1672 runs at an average of 26.12 in T20Is.

Interestingly, he also holds the record for the fastest century in ODIs. He scored a century against West Indies in just 31 balls. Additionally he was part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore team in the IPL. He has played a total of 184 matches in the IPL, scoring 5162 runs at an average of 39.71. It also includes 3 centuries.
