Despite BCCI’s efforts, the Asia Cup is finally in Pakistan! Why will the Indian team tour?
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have been at loggerheads for the past few months. The issue of Asia Cup 2023 has seen BCCI and PCB clash many times. But finally this controversy seems to be settling somewhere. According to media reports, Asia Cup 2023 will be held in Pakistan. But the matches of the Indian team will be held outside Pakistan.
According to ESPN Cricinfo, Asia Cup 2023 is likely to be held in Pakistan as planned. The only difference would be that, with the Indian team sticking to its terms, India’s matches would be held outside Pakistan. The Indian team has to play five matches in this year’s Asia Cup and at least two of them will be against Pakistan. In this case, it is said that the Asian Cricket Conference (ACC) will organize these five matches outside Pakistan. Although these matches are said to be held outside Pakistan, the exact venue of these matches is yet to be decided. ACC is said to host India’s matches in England, Oman, Sri Lanka and UAE. However, no concrete information about this has been found yet.
India and Pakistan will be in the same group in the upcoming Asia Cup. India-Pakistan and with it the sixth team to qualify for the Asia Cup will be in this group. Also, the second group consists of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. This year the tournament will be held in the first 15 days of September. The tournament will last for 13 days and 13 matches including the final will be played.
Meanwhile, this whole Asia Cup controversy started after a statement by BCCI Secretary Jai Shah. As Jas Shah had said in October last year, the upcoming Asia Cup will be played at a neutral venue. After Shah’s statement, the then PCB President Rameez Raja was also directly threatened by the BCCI. Raja had said that India will not come to Pakistan for the Asia Cup, while Pakistan will also not go to India for the upcoming ODI World Cup. But later Raja came under the limelight for his statements and due to some reasons he had to resign as PCB chairman. Currently, the PCBC chairmanship is in the hands of Najam Sethi. A few days ago, Sethi had also called a meeting with the BCCI in the wake of the Asia Cup.
