Currently, the Sri Lankan cricket team is on a tour of New Zealand. The Sri Lankan team has to play two Test matches on this tour. In the first Test match of the series, the Sri Lankan team seems to be lagging behind. If Sri Lanka wins both these matches and the Ahmedabad Test between India and Australia goes to Australia, Sri Lanka will have a chance to play in the finals of the World Test Championship. However, Sri Lanka’s senior cricketer Angelo Mathews has spoken harsh words to the International Cricket Council i.e. ICC.
The ICC always seems to be talking about saving as well as growing Test cricket. For this, the World Test Championship has also been started from 2019. However, only a few teams seem to be benefiting from this. Mathews reacted strongly to this issue. he said,
“Everyone, including the ICC, is talking about saving Test cricket. However, honestly no one tries for this. Because, the Sri Lankan team seems to be playing only five Tests in a year.”
There is some truth in these allegations of Mathews. In the 2021-2023 cycle of the World Test Championship, the Big Three England, India and Australia are seen playing the most matches. England got a chance to play as many as 22 matches in this cycle. Australia and India also played 19 and 18 matches respectively. Then South Africa played in 15 matches and Pakistan in 14 matches. New Zealand and West Indies have played 13 matches each while Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have played only 12 matches in this cycle.
