‘Even if Suriya had hit six sixes it would not have mattered…’, know why Mohit Sharma said this
The Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans reached the final of IPL 2023 on Friday (May 26). This is the 16th season of the Indian Premier League and Chennai Super Kings are all set to play their 10th final. The second eliminator match of the league was played between Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on Friday. Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, Mumbai lost this match by 62 runs. Mohit Sharma’s contribution along with Shubman Gill’s was crucial in Gujarat’s victory. According to Mohit, even if Suryakumar Yadav had hit him with six sixes, he would not have changed his strategy.
Mumbai Indians won the toss and bowled first in this match. Gujarat Titans scored 233 for 3 in 20 overs. Shubman Gill made the biggest contribution in this. Gill scored 129 runs off 60 balls. In reply, Mumbai Indians were bowled out for 171 runs in 18.2 overs. Mohit Sharma became the biggest weapon of Gujarat Titans to destroy Mumbai. Mohinet took 5 wickets for 10 runs in 2.2 overs. Mumbai fans expected victory from Suryakumar Yadav. However, Mohinet made it three in the 15th over of the innings and dashed Mumbai’s dreams of a final match. After the win, Mohin gave an important comment about Surya’s wicket.
After the match, Mohit Sharma came in front of the media. On this occasion, he disclosed the strategy planned for Suryakumar. Mohit said, “I feel lucky to get five wickets in such quick succession. At one time we were scared by the way Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Verma were batting. I felt that if these two are not eliminated, the match can slip away. I had already decided that Suryakumar would not experiment much with bowling.”
“We had a meeting in which it was decided that Suryakumar should not try too hard. By doing so, things become easier for him. So the idea was to bowl length. Even if he had hit six sixes, it wouldn’t have mattered. Because we thought it would be difficult for him to play the shot on the length ball. The match was in the paint, but after his wicket, we felt we could win. After this wicket I got peace. However, after the last wicket, we were thinking that we will win. Because Gujarat Titans have already lost some matches in a disappointing fashion, while the team has won some matches.”
Meanwhile, considering the match as a whole, Mumbai Indians failed to perform as expected both in the batting and later bowling departments. Suryakumar contributed the highest 61 runs off 38 balls for Mumbai. The opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Nihal Vadra could not give the team a good start. Tilak Verma looked in good form, but he too lost his wicket with 43 off 14 balls. Akash Madhwal, who took 5 wickets for Mumbai in the eliminator match, also failed to perform as expected in this match. Akash took one wicket after spending 52 runs in four overs.
