He was banned after playing two matches in the T20I series against Australia in September last year. He has yet to step into the field after that. While informing about his same injury, BCCI wrote,

So it was said about Shreyas Iyer’s injury,
Shreyas will undergo surgery on his lower back next week. After that, he will be under the observation of experts for two weeks. After completion of this process, he will join NCA.’
Shreyas suffered a back injury during practice on the second day of the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Test against Australia. After that he was out of this match. Also, chances of him playing in the final of the upcoming World Test Championship are also low. BCCI wants to see both the players in the squad for ODI World Cup.
