Former South Africa captain retires after being left out of T20 World Cup, currently reigning WPL

Former South African women’s cricket team captain Dane van Niekerk has retired from international cricket. Currently, Nikark is playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the ongoing Women’s Premier League in India. Nekirk’s retirement had been rumored for the past few days, but her retirement was officially announced on Thursday (March 16) evening. South Africa Cricket gave information about this.

South Africa hosted the T20 World Cup last month. However, Dane van Niekerk was not given a chance in this important tournament played in his homeland. The exclusion of Niekerk from the team also raised questions on the team management. On the other hand, this veteran player was seen to be upset. Sune Luus captained South Africa in Niekerk’s absence and led the team to the semi-finals. But in the semi-final, Australia defeated Africa to reach the final. Luce was later appointed as the regular captain of the South African team.

Niekerk played her last international match in September 2022. She was then left out of the team due to injury. It was said that Nikark will return to the team in the tri-match in the country in the month of January this year. But it didn’t actually happen. According to reports, Niekirk could not make a comeback as she failed to clear the test and was subsequently dropped from the T20 World Cup as well.

Taking a look at Niekerk’s international career, she has played one Test, 107 ODIs and 86 T20 Internationals for her team. In these matches she has scored 22, 2175, 1877 runs respectively. While in bowling, she has taken 1, 138 and 65 wickets in these three formats.
