Gavaskar got angry at Rohit’s leadership; Said, ‘Despite playing more than 100 IPL matches as a captain…’

When the legendary Indian batsman Virat Kohli stepped down from the captaincy, the responsibility of captaining the Indian team fell on the shoulders of Rohit Sharma. At this time along with Indian cricket lovers, the team also hoped that Dhoni would end the ICC trophy drought. It also included the name of great batsman Sunil Gavaskar. However, when India lost the T20 World Cup 2022 title and also lost in the World Test Championship, Little Master Gavaskar got upset with Rohit. At this time, he bombarded Rahul Dravid, Vikram Rathod and Paras Mhambre from the training department with questions.

What did Gavaskar say?
Sunil Gavaskar, who celebrated his 74th birthday on Monday (July 10), spoke about Rohit Sharma while interacting with the media. “I expected more from him,” he said. Playing in India is different, but when you do well abroad, it’s a real test. His performance there has been disappointing. Not only this, but in the T20 format of cricket too, it was disappointing not to reach the final, despite having a lot of IPL experience, playing more than a hundred matches as a captain, and having the best all-rounders.”

This time he tried to know whether India’s defeat was properly reviewed by the selectors and the BCCI. Also, Gavaskar also spoke about Australia’s loss to India in the final of the World Test Championship last month. He said that the coach Rahul Dravid and the captain should have been asked about the decisions taken in the WTC final and what was their thinking behind each decision.

Gavaskar said, “They should have asked, ‘Why did you field first?’ Well, it was said during the toss that it was cloudy. The question then must be asked, ‘Weren’t you aware of Travis Head’s weakness against the straight ball?’ Why use bouncy balls when the score was 80? You know, when Head came to bat, Ricky Ponting sitting in the commentary box was saying, ‘Bounce him, bounce him.’ Everyone knew about it, but we didn’t try.”

Interestingly, Rohit Sharma’s leadership was heavily criticized after losing the WTC Final match. Also, questions were raised about his preparation. He had said that a team needs at least 20 days of preparation for such big matches. However, Gavaskar did well on this too.

Gavaskar disagreed with Rohit’s statement. He said, “What preparation are we talking about? Now they are in West Indies. You have an example of the World Test Championship. What game are you playing there? So what is this 20-25 days? When you talk about preparation, be realistic about it. Went 15 days ago and played two practice matches. The core players can rest, but the marginal players can also challenge them, who are not performing well.”

Questions raised by Gavaskar on Rohit Sharma and the coaching department have become a topic of discussion right now. Indian team is currently on West Indies tour where they have to play 2 Tests, 3 ODIs and 5 T20I series. In this case, the first test match will start from July 12. Indian team will try to win the Test series. (legend sunil gavaskar furious over skipper rohit sharma captaincy read here)
