Hasaranga becomes June 2023 Player of the Month, Gardner creates history
Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga and Australia’s Ashley Gardner were adjudged Player of the Month for their outstanding performances in the month of June. The ICC Player of the Month Award was given to both of them. Harsanga won the award in the World Cup 2023 qualifiers played in Zimbabwe while Gardner won the accolade for her performance in the Women’s Ashes series.
Last month Wanindu Hasaranga () took 26 wickets at an average of 10 for the Sri Lankan team. He took six wickets for Sri Lanka’s opening match against UAE in a World Cup qualifier. He then took five wickets each against Oman and Ireland with 13 and 79 runs respectively. Wanindu Hasaranga meanwhile became the first bowler in the history of ODI cricket to take more than five wickets in three consecutive matches. Prabath Jayasuriya of the Sri Lankan team won the award in July 2022. Hasaranga was able to win the award for the team 11 months later. Hasranga beat both Zimbabwe’s Sean Williams and Australia’s Travis Head to win the award.
On the other hand Ashley Gardner () was given the award for her performance in the Women’s Ashes 2023 season. Her performance helped the Australian women’s team win the Ashes Test by 89 runs. Gardner scored 40 runs in the first innings for Australia and also took four wickets. England team was leading after the first innings. Gardner failed to bat in the second innings, but took 8 wickets while bowling. During this, 66 runs were spent by her. She has won the award beating England’s Tammy Beaumont and West Indies’ Hayley Mathews.
