“He’s just a talking job”, the Australian scoffed at Robinson
The first match of the prestigious Ashes Test series was played at Birmingham. Australia defeated England by 2 wickets on the last day (Tuesday 20th June) of this match which took place in extremely tight conditions. Australia’s captain Pat Cummins gave the team a commanding lead in the series with a fitting innings of captaincy. A statement made by England fast bowler Ollie Robinson during the match was now well received by Australia wicketkeeper Matthew Wade.
Speaking after the third day’s play, England fast bowler Ollie Robinson said,
“There are some good batsmen in the Australian team. However, after Pat Cummins, the Australian team is playing with three elevens.”
His cash was with Australia’s bottom three of Scott Boland, Nathan Lyon and Josh Hazlewood. However, the same Australian batsmen made them sweat in the last innings. Boland, who came in to bat at number five as the night watchman, scored 20 runs. After that, Lion put on a 55-run partnership with Cummins to give his team victory. Commenting on Robinson after Australia’s win, Wade said,
“Oli Robinson is a forgettable cricketer. He bowls at 124 and his mouth is very strong.” Many former Australian cricketers also targeted Robinson.
Considering this match, England declared their innings on 393 runs on the first day on the strength of Joe Root’s century. Australia then responded to reach 386 with Khawaja’s century. England could score 273 runs in their second innings. Australia completed the challenge of 281 runs for victory by retaining 2 wickets.
