Hyderabad FC’s dreams were shattered after Mumbai City FC won the League Shield of the Hero Indian Super League 2022-23 (ISL). But, they need to earn two points in the remaining three matches to secure the second spot in the Hero ISL. On Tuesday, they will face the challenge of ATK Mohun Bagan at home. The match will be held at the GMC Balayogi Athletics Stadium in Hyderabad. A win is equally important for ATK Mohun Bagan to stay in the race for the playoffs.
ATK Mohun Bagan remain in the race for the play offs, but have managed just one win in their last five matches. Although they have maintained their position in the top four, Bangalore FC and they have the same 28 points. But, they have an extra match in hand. They have to face Kerala Blasters and East Bengal FC in their last two matches.
Failure to score goals is the biggest problem facing ATK Mohun Bagan. They have managed to score only three goals in five matches. In the previous match, Jamshedpur FC had held them to a goalless draw. Dimitri Petratos has scored all three goals in the last five matches. ATK Mohun Bagan have managed to score 20 goals this season and the bottom two teams in the table are behind them in this regard. 12 out of 20 goals have been scored by Petratos and Hugo Boumos.
As these two are not getting the expected help from other teammates, the challenge in front of the head coach Juan Ferrando has increased. “To be honest, I am thinking more about getting three points and finishing third. What if we get out of the play-offs, the thought is not in the head. This is not our mindset. Our mindset is to go to Hyderabad and fight for three points. Kerala Blasters lost to Bangalore on Saturday and this is an opportunity for us to move forward,” said Ferrando.
Hyderabad FC and head coach Manolo Marquez must be worried after losing to Odisha FC last week. For the first time in this season, a team managed to score three goals against Hyderabad FC after the first match against Mumbai City FC. ATK Mohun Bagan has won against Odisha FC in the match on 26 November. Hence, Hyderabad FC will have to play with more intensity in Tuesday’s match.
“Nowadays every match is challenging and 5-6 teams are trying for remaining 4 spots. It is really challenging to play against such teams. People who love football in the country also know how strong ATK Mohun Bagan is, but we are definitely not easy to beat,” said Marcuse. In the 7 matches between the two teams so far, ATK Mohun Bagan have won three matches and three matches have been drawn. Hyderabad beat ATK in the first leg of the semi-final last season. (Hyderabad FC will play against ATK Mohun Bagan for second place)
