‘I knew about Dhoni’s strategy in the final…’, Muttiah Muralitharan’s big revelation
Former Indian captain MS Dhoni bats himself at top order in the 2011 ODI World Cup final. It remains one of the most talked about events in the tournament’s history. Interestingly, Yuvraj Singh was in superb form. After Virat Kohli’s dismissal, Yuvraj was expected to take the field with Gautam Gambhir. However, to everyone’s surprise at that time, Dhoni came to bat in place of Yuvraj. Meanwhile, Dhoni stunned everyone by playing a brilliant innings and winning the World Cup for India after 28 years. Sri Lanka’s veteran spinner Muttiah Muralitharan has revealed Dhoni’s strategy.
Muralitharan had an idea of Dhoni’s strategy
Muttiah Muralitharan has expressed his opinion after the ODI World Cup 2023 schedule was announced on Tuesday (June 27). Along with this, he also discussed the strategy behind MS Dhoni batting at the top order in the final of the 2011 ODI World Cup. He said that he was aware that Indian captain Dhoni himself would come in to bat after the wicket of a batsman.
He said, “I knew. The reason behind this was that Yuvraj used to struggle while playing against me. Yuvraj was the best player in the World Cup at that time. Because, he had performed brilliantly at number four in the middle order. I knew that Dhoni will come to play above this number. Because, I was bowling a lot against him in the nets in Chennai. Because, we were playing IPL. So Dhoni knows very well how to play against me.”
Speaking further, he also said, “When he (Virat Kohli) got out, Dhoni himself was batting at the top order. I knew he would come. Because he knows how to play my bowling.”
A very unfortunate qualifier for Sri Lanka
This time, Muralitharan said that it was unfortunate to play in the qualifiers. He said, “We have not played well in the last two years. Still I think Sri Lanka have got a lot of good talent and good spinners, good bowling attack and good batsmen. Unfortunately we have not played up to our potential in the last four-five years. We had a successful Asia Cup, but that’s T20 cricket. T20 and ODI cricket are very different.”
The ODI World Cup 2023 will be held from October 5 to November 19. The final match of the tournament will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. (Former spinner Muttiah Muralitharan makes big revelation on Dhoni coming in up batting order of 2011 world cup final)
