‘I will always regret being a bowler…’, why did Ashwin say this in the last phase of his career?

Ravichandran Ashwin could not play in the final of the World Test Championship. The Indian team led by Rohit Sharma was defeated by Australia by 209 runs in this match. In the final match, Ashwin was dropped from the playing XI citing the pitch. However, strong displeasure is being expressed over this decision of the captain-coach. Ravichandran Ashwin has also spoken about it. According to Ashwin, both batsmen and bowlers should get equal justice in the team.

Team India played with four fast bowlers in the WTC final. After seeing the green top pitch before the match, it was decided not to include spinner Ravichandran Ashwin in the playing eleven. Aswin said he got the news 48 hours before the match that he would not be part of the playing eleven. Ashwin was dropped due to the pitch, but no major decisions were made in India’s batting order. Against this backdrop, Ashwin expressed his displeasure. Ashwin was a batsman at the beginning of his career, but realizing the future, he decided to become a bowler. Ashwin’s decision is wrong now. Ashwin spoke about this in a recent interview.

“This is absolutely true, I am not telling any lies. One day I was watching India-Sri Lanka match. The bowling attack of the Indian team was failing. Sachin Tendulkar is my favorite player and the runs he was scoring were wasted due to bowling. One day I thought that I should become a bowler. Can I bowl better than the bowlers currently playing in the team? I thought so. This is a very unique way of thinking. But I thought so and started off-spin bowling. It all started from here. But when I retire tomorrow, I will regret that I was a good batsman. I should never have become a bowler.”

“I am not saying batsmen should not play. They must play, but the bowlers must play like them. Both of them should be treated equally,” Ashwin added. The WTC final saw the fast bowlers get help on the first day of the two days. But in the last two days, Australian spinner Nathan Lyon did the maximum. If India had a spinner like Aswin, the team could definitely benefit from him. Although Aswin did not play in the match, he retained his number one spot in the ICC Test rankings.
