The Indian cricket team is currently on a tour of the West Indies. The tour will start from July 12. Rohit Sharma has retained the responsibility as the captain of the Test team. However, veteran Ajinkya Rahane, who has returned from the World Test Championship, has once again been given the vice-captaincy of the team. While Rahane was praised by many after getting the responsibility, MSK Prasad, the former chairman of the Indian selection committee, has given his reaction to the selection committee’s decision.
He scored 89 in the first innings and 46 in the second innings of the final of the World Test Championship while returning to the Indian team after a year and a half. After that, coach Rahul Dravid said that he can once again become a regular member of the Indian Test team. After that, he was directly made the vice-captain of the team. Speaking on this issue, Prasad said,
“If Ajinkya Rahane can be vice-captain again after his comeback, why can’t Virat be made captain again? Don’t know what the team management’s mindset is about Virat’s leadership? However, if you are going to remove Rohit early, there is no problem in thinking ahead and making Virat the captain.”
After several controversial developments, Virat had stepped down as the captain of the limited overs team after the 2021 T20 World Cup. Subsequently, he also resigned from the Test captaincy after the tour of South Africa. Currently, he is part of the team only as a batsman. However, there are often demands to make him Test captain once again.
