“It wasn’t like that in our time”, the former cricketer was speechless by the team management’s decision
The West Indies vs India first Test begins on Wednesday (July 12) at the Windsor Park ground in Dominica. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ishan Kishan made their Test debut in this match. Meanwhile, India’s regular opener Shubman Gill will be seen batting at number three for the first time in this match. However, by the decision of the team management, India’s former openerVeer and commentator Akash Chopra looked a bit shocked.
It has been clarified earlier that captain Rohit Sharma and young Yashasvi Jaiswal will be the openers for the Indian team in this match. Therefore, the team management said that the regular opener Gill will play at number three. However, expressing surprise at this decision, Chopra said on his YouTube channel,
“It’s a really big thing that Gilles expressed his desire to play at number three and the team management agreed immediately. His request was granted even though he played very few matches for India. This was not the case in our time. It is good for his career and he can succeed in this place as well.”
Gill has played only 13 Test matches for the Indian team so far. What is special is that he played the role of opener in all these matches. With Jaiswal coming in as the opener and regular number three batsman Cheteshwar Pujara on the other hand, Gill claimed the spot. Hence, India will see two young players playing in the top three positions against the West Indies.
