Under the leadership of captain Harmanpreet Kaur, the Indian women’s team won the first match of the T20 World Cup. The team began their World Cup campaign with a match against arch-rivals Pakistan. In this match, Pakistan had to accept defeat by 7 wickets. Indian batsman Jemimah Rodrigues was the main reason for the defeat. Although Jemimah was the man of the match in this match, a mistake made by the Pakistan team cost them dearly.
India bowled first in this match after losing the toss. Batting first, Pakistan team managed to score 149 for 4. In reply, India achieved this huge target with one over and 7 wickets to spare. Every ball was important for the Indian team while chasing the target. So if a ball gets the team to play more, then nothing can be more beneficial for the team. India similarly got an extra ball to play as Pakistan bowled and Jemimah Rodrigues made the most of it.
With India set a target of 150 for victory, the team maintained the expected run rate from the start. In the 7th over of the innings, a big mistake was made by the umpires. Pakistan’s veteran bowler Nida Dar () was bowling in this over. She bowled 7 balls instead of 6 in this over. In the first six overs of the over, the Indian batsmen could not hit a single boundary. India scored only 6 runs in the first six balls. But a mistake made by the umpires in counting the balls cost Pakistan dearly. Jemimah hit a boundary over points off the last ball of Nida Dar.
Meanwhile, considering the total of the match between the two teams, Jemimah scored the highest 53 runs for India. Skipper Harmanpreet was dismissed for just 16 runs. But Richa Ghosh supported Jemima till the end and scored an unbeaten 31 runs. Openers Shefali Verma and Vishakha Bhatia scored 33 and 17 runs respectively.
