Khawaja achieved the rarest record in cricket, previously achieved by three Indians

The first match of the Ashes 2023 was played at the Edgbaston ground in Birmingham. Australia defeated England on the final day of the match (Tuesday 20 June). The match between the two teams turned out to be a feast for the fans. Both the teams were trying to win till the last ball. However, eventually Australia prevailed. Pat Cummins played a fitting captaincy and took two wickets to lead the team to victory. Australia’s opener Usman Khawaja, who was the man of the match, also made a unique record of batting for five consecutive days.

Few batsmen have achieved the feat of batting for five consecutive days in international Test cricket. Khawaja showed such performance in this match. He was unbeaten on 4 runs on the first day. Unbeaten on 122 on the second day. So, he added another 15 runs to this on the third day. Then on the fourth day, he got a chance to bat in Australia’s second innings as well. He added 34 runs at the end of the fourth day and another 31 runs on the fifth day.

Only 13 batsmen have achieved this feat in international cricket so far. Interestingly, India’s ML Jayasimha was the first batsman to do so. He did this feat against Australia in 1970. Ravi Shastri and Cheteshwar Pujara have also batted for five days from India. Shastri batted against England in 1984 and Pujara batted for five days against Sri Lanka in 2017.

Considering this match, England declared their innings on 393 runs on the first day on the strength of Joe Root’s century. Australia then responded to reach 386 with Khawaja’s century. England could score 273 runs in their second innings. Australia completed the challenge of 281 runs for victory by retaining 2 wickets.
