Lost the century, but won the heart! RCB’s Sophie Devine’s 99 against Gujarat

In the Women’s Premier League, the second match of the day was played on Saturday (March 18) with Gujarat Giants vs Royal Challengers Bangalore. Initially, Gujarat batted stormily and scored 188 runs. However, RCB’s experienced opener Sophie Devine found this focus too weak. Batting aggressively, she posted the best individual score of the tournament. She was dismissed just one run short of her first century of the tournament.

Gujarat challenged RCB by 189 runs in this match. The opening pair of captain Smriti Mandhana and Sophie Devine, who have failed so far in replying to these runs, literally rained sixes and fours on the ground. Smriti scored 35 runs off 31 balls. However, Devine on the other hand was not stopping. She took care of all the bowlers and scored 99 runs. She hit 9 fours and 8 sixes in 36 balls before being dismissed. This was the best individual score of the tournament.

Earlier, the highest individual score in the Women’s Premier League was held by UP Warriors captain Alyssa Healy. She had an unbeaten knock of 95 runs. Devine also holds the record for the fastest 36-ball century in women’s international T20 cricket. Sophie has also remained unbeaten on 99 runs in a T20 match once before. It was time for her in the 2019 Big Bash League.

Although she is the first batsman to be dismissed for 99 runs in the Women’s Premier League, five batsmen have been dismissed for the same number of runs in the IPL. This includes Chris Gayle, Rituraj Gaikwad, Virat Kohli, Prithvi Shaw and Ishan Kishan.
