‘Mumbai put money on a lame horse…, don’t give him a rupee’, Gavaskar scolds Archer
Before the start of the Indian Premier League 2023 tournament, five-time champions Mumbai Indians had high expectations from Jofra Archer. Archer has returned home after playing just three matches. Of all the matches he has played this season, he has been the most expensive. Seeing him, it was never felt that he was making the batsmen sweat. The biggest reason behind this was his fitness. He was not fit before the start of IPL. Now this has come to light after he has completely dropped out of the competition. In this case, the former great player of the Indian team, Sunil Gavaskar, has fired at him.
Jofra Archer, who left IPL 2023 and returned home, is being trolled a lot in India. Sunil Gavaskar has directly said that Mumbai does not need to pay him a single rupee. Gavaskar gave a sharp reaction to Archer. He said that Archer has broken the trust of Mumbai.
Gavaskar wrote in a column, “How has the Jofra Archer experience been for Mumbai Indians? They bought him despite knowing he was injured and would only be available for this season. They gave him a large sum of money and what did he give in return? He didn’t seem 100 percent fit. He should have informed the franchisee about this. They realized when he came and realized that he can bowl at a normal pace.”
Gavaskar further wrote, “During the tournament, he went abroad for treatment as directed by his country’s cricket board. So he was never fully fit. However, he came to play IPL. If he was committed to the franchise, who might be paying him more than ECB. He should have stayed here till the end even if he didn’t play. However, he also opted to return to the UK.”
“A day later a story is heard that he is going to sign a multi-million pound deal with Mumbai Indians to play in different leagues around the world. This is the biggest distraction trick. Mumbai Indians are not a foolish franchise to sign a limping horse for any future run. Make no mistake. Mumbai Indians will not be happy with this incident. Also, they have now made a good comeback in the tournament in his absence. So Archer will be lucky if he gets full salary for IPL. There is no point in paying even a single rupee for such a player, no matter how big a name, if he is not available for the entire tournament. It is the player’s preference whether he would like to play for or with an IPL franchise. If he chooses a country other than IPL, he gets full marks. However, if he chooses IPL, he has to fulfill his commitments and not give any reason. Especially at a time when qualifying for the play-offs is crucial,” Gavaskar further wrote.
This column of Gavaskar is currently in discussion everywhere. In the IPL 2023 tournament, Mumbai Indians team has won 7 out of 13 matches and is at the fifth position. Mumbai’s next match will be against Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 21. It will be important to see how the Mumbai team performs in this match.
