The Indian team is currently on a tour of the West Indies. After playing the Test and ODI series, India have to play a five-match T20I series against the West Indies. The squad for the series was announced on Wednesday (July 5). Hardik Pandya is the captain of this team. Regular captains Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been rested. However, looking at the overall team selection, it can be seen that the BCCI and the selection committee have now started thinking about the future in T20 cricket.
The squad selected for the West Indies tour does not feature senior players. Regular captains Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have not got a place in this team. They are said to have been rested. However, the pair had not played in the previous four T20 series. Now Shubman Gill, Ishaan Kishan and Yashasvi Jaiswal will be seen on this tour as openers. While in the middle order, Tilak Verma will be seen playing for the first time in the Indian team. Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya and Sanju Samson will man the middle order. Arshdeep Singh, Umran Malik, Avesh Khan and Mukesh Kumar will have the pace bowling burden for this series, but Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami will return in their place.
A few days ago, BCCI sources had said that the final decision regarding the T20 squad will be taken only before the ODI World Cup. Ravindra Jadeja, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ravichandran Ashwin will not be considered for the T20 squad. Only the players who performed brilliantly in the IPL will be considered for the T20 squad henceforth. The Indian team will play under the leadership of Hardik Pandya in the upcoming T20 World Cup.
