‘Nowadays players are just for money…’, lamented the champion player after seeing West Indies exit the World Cup

West Indies lost to Scotland in the third Super 6 match of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 qualifiers. In this match, Scotland won by 7 wickets and eliminated the West Indies from the World Cup. For the first time in its 48-year history, the West Indies failed to qualify for the ODI World Cup. After this defeat many are disappointed from fans to former cricketers. Meanwhile, the two legends who witnessed the golden era of West Indies cricket are saddened that the team did not qualify for the World Cup.

Know how West Indies veteran cricketers Gordon Greenidge and Joel Garner have the experience of winning the ODI World Cup. Both players were part of the West Indies team that defeated England at Lord’s in 1979. Speaking to the media, Gordon Greenidge said, “I don’t watch much cricket these days. Especially limited overs cricket. Earlier, West Indies team used to feel very sad when they lost. But not now. Because, over the years, our level has fallen. It is difficult to imagine the World Cup without the West Indies. Now the team is not the same.”

On the other hand, Joel Garner said, “We are not what we used to be. Earlier, players used to feel proud while playing for West Indies. That was our motivation. Now young players are giving importance to T20 league. It’s not their fault, everyone wants financial security.”

Speaking further, he also said that, “Our generation did not get that much money, the money used to come from county cricket. However, today’s cricketers have many ways to earn money. They cannot be blamed. The pride of playing for the West Indies has to be brought back.” Also, Garner said, “a proper technique has to be in place to keep the focus and motivation of the young players. Everyone has to make this effort, not one person or group.”

When the West Indies team failed to reach the Super 12 round of the 2022 T20 World Cup, the then president of Cricket West Indies, Ricky Skerritt, promised a thorough review and changes. Not much has changed since then and Skerrit is disappointed. “It’s sad to see West Indies not getting a place in the World Cup, we have such a glorious history and it’s sad to see,” he said.

West Indies team will face against India
After getting out of the World Cup, now the West Indies team will be seen playing two hands against India. The West Indies vs India 2-match Test series is starting from July 12. After this series, a series of 3 ODIs and 5 T20 matches will also be played in both teams.
