‘Playing in England is like gambling’, the Australian opener was scared before the WTCB final!
According to Australia opener Usman Khawaja, opening batsmen face difficulties while playing in England. India and Australia will face off at England’s The Overall Stadium from June 7 to 11. This is the final match of the World Test Championship and Usman Khawaja will have to give Australia a good start in this match. However, his statistics in England have not been satisfactory.
Usman Khawaja expressed his opinion about this in a recent interview. According to him, it is not easy for any team’s top-order batsmen to score in England. The only option the players have is to work harder and expect less of themselves. Usman Khawaja himself has always been seen struggling to score in England conditions. He has scored at an average of 19.66 in the 6 Test matches he has played in England. However, Khawaja is in good form right now. He made a comeback to the England Test team in January last year. He has scored 1608 runs at an average of 69.91 in 16 Tests since then.
Australia also have to play the World Test Championship final against India followed by a five-Test Ashes series against England. Khawaja is worried as the only match against India and the subsequent Ashes series will be played in England. The first match of the Ashes series will start from June 16 in Birmingham. Regarding this, Khawaja said, “I think England is the most difficult place for the top three batsmen. It is not easy to face the new ball in England conditions. Sometimes the situation is favorable for us there too, but it requires the help of luck. Because often times the sky is clouded after the opposing team is all out, and sometimes the sun is down.”
As Khawaja said, as the weather changes, batting like this is like gambling. “All I understand is, work hard and expect very little of yourself when you’re on the England tour,” he said. Focus on one match at a time. Because as a batsman you can fail. Because as a batsman, if you score well, you should take advantage of it as much as you can.” (Usman Khawchi’s reaction to England’s situation ahead of WTC final)
