A meeting between Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur and wrestlers was held on Wednesday (June 7). The sports minister and the wrestlers held a discussion for five hours. After the meeting, Olympic medalist wrestler Bajrang Punia interacted with the media.
Bajrang Punia informed that, “The government has asked for 15 days, along with a promise to withdraw the case against the players.” After the meeting, Sports Minister Anurag Thakur said in a press conference, “The discussion with the wrestlers was fruitful. The players want the charges to be filed by June 15. He has also said that he will not protest till then. At this time, Thakur also said that the election for the post of president of the Wrestling Federation of India will be held by June 30.
Sakshi Malik, who won India an Olympic bronze medal in wrestling, said, “Our main demand is that Brijbhushan be arrested. We will not stop the agitation just yet.” Vinesh Phogat, the main face of the wrestlers’ movement, was not present in the meeting. Vinesh had attended a pre-scheduled meeting in Balali village in Haryana.
Meanwhile, the dispute between the Indian wrestler and the former president of the wrestling federation, Brij Bhushan Singh, has been going on for the last four to five months. BJP MP Brijbhushan Singh has been accused of sexual harassment by some women wrestlers. On April 23, the wrestler sat for the second time against Brijbhushan Singh. The agitation was crushed by the Delhi Police on 28 May. The wrestlers were detained by the police as they were marching towards the new parliament building without permission.
