‘Rohit was made Test captain against his will…’, insists Ganguly and Jay Shah

Last year in February, Rohit Sharma became India’s Test captain. After the tour of South Africa, Virat Kohli stepped down as India’s Test captain. After Virat left the captaincy, Rohit became the captain of the team, who continues to lead the team even today. But according to recent information, Rohit was not at all interested in accepting the captaincy of the Test team. Rohit accepted this responsibility due to the insistence of then BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and Secretary Jai Shah.

BCCI sources have been quoted in the media as saying, “At that time, two senior BCCI officials (Ganguly and Shah) prepared Rohit Sharma for this. KL Rahul could not leave his captaincy impression during the tour of South Africa. It is against this backdrop that Rohit was groomed for the captaincy.” Meanwhile, under the leadership of Rohit, India won the series at home against Sri Lanka by a margin of 2-0. India’s 2021 tour of England was left with one Test match, which was rescheduled in July last year. But in this match the Indian team lost in the test match.

Rohit was then rested for the Test series against Bangladesh. Under his leadership, India won the 2023 Border Gavaskar Test series 2–1. The final of the recently concluded World Test Championship was also played under Rohit’s leadership. India lost this match against Australia by 209 runs.

Both Rohit’s individual performance and leadership in the WTC final were criticized. There are also talks that soon Rohit will have to leave the captaincy of the team. But according to sources, he will not have time to leave the captaincy. But the selectors may have to decide on his personal performance and leadership in the coming years.
