The first match of the prestigious Ashes Test series was played at Birmingham. Australia defeated England by 2 wickets on the last day (Tuesday 20th June) of this match which took place in extremely tight conditions. Australia’s captain Pat Cummins gave the team a commanding lead in the series with a fitting innings of captaincy. Along with this he replied to England fast bowler Ollie Robinson.
England team showed very aggressive game in this match. He declared his first innings on 393 runs despite losing eight wickets on the first day. Then Australia also challenged them and scored 387 runs. England’s second innings failed to reach 300 thanks to Cummins’ bowling.
On the fourth day of the Test, Australia scored 107 for 3 in the second innings. They needed 172 runs to win on the final day. Earlier, speaking after the third day’s play, England fast bowler Ollie Robinson said,
“We have a big chance to win this match. We need to catch Pat Cummins and take Australia by just four wickets. Because the Australian team is playing with three number eleven batsmen.”

Boland, who came in to bat at number five as the night watchman, scored 20 runs. Australia then needed 54 more runs with only two wickets to spare. Meanwhile, captain Cummins fought the fort till the end with Lion as his companion. Both remained unbeaten and helped Australia win. Cummins scored 44 while Lion scored a crucial 16. Therefore, it is said that the Australian team has given an accurate answer to Robinson’s statement.
