The Board of Control for Cricket in India i.e. BCCI announced the Indian team for the West Indies tour at the beginning of June. Only Test and ODI teams were selected in this. Cheteshwar Pujara was dropped from the Test team in this team. Also, Sarfraz Khan, who has been doing brilliantly in domestic cricket, was again overlooked. After this many people from fans to grandparents criticized the selectors. Meanwhile, former Indian team captain and former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has supported Sarfaraz Khan.
Sourav Ganguly supports Sarfaraz Khan. He objected to Sarfaraz being ignored once again. Ganguly also named Bengal batsman Abhimanyu Easwaran as one of the youngsters who should have been considered for the Test squad.
What did Ganguly say about Sarfaraz?
Speaking to the media, Ganguly said, “I think Yashasvi Jaiswal has scored a lot of runs in Ranji Trophy, Irani Trophy, Duleep Trophy. That’s why he’s in the team. I feel sorry for Sarfraz. For the amount of runs he has scored in the last three years, he should have got a chance. Also, the same goes for Abhimanyu Iswaran. I am surprised that both have been removed from the team, but they should get a chance in the future. In my view, Jaiswal is a good choice.”
No problem against fast bowling
Ganguly has seen Sarfaraz up close during his tenure as Director of Cricket at Delhi Capitals. He is not happy with the perception that Sarfraz cannot play against fast bowling. He said, “If you don’t play him against fast bowling, how do you know? If he had a problem, he wouldn’t have been able to score so many runs across all fours. I personally think he has no problem against fast bowlers. He should be given a chance.”
In fact, Abhimanyu Easwaran scored 798 runs at an average of 66.50 while batting in 8 matches during Ranji Trophy 2022-23. It includes 3 centuries and 3 fifties. Also, Sarfraz scored 556 runs at a brilliant average of 92.66. Now, it will be important to see whether these batsmen get a chance in the Indian team in the future.
