Former legendary Indian cricket team opener Virender Sehwag was famous all over the world for his explosive batting. He had the ability to make the best bowlers in the world sweat with his batting. Whenever Sehwag has taken to the field, he has created a storm with the bat. However, before his entry into the Indian team, an incident happened to him, which delayed his debut for a year. In a recent interview to a YouTube channel, he told the story of his debut, how he had to return after reaching the airport.
What did Sehwag say?
Virender Sehwag said, “This story goes back to 1998, when the Indian team went to Sharjah for the Coca-Cola Cup. At that time I suddenly got a call from the team management and they called Sharjah. Hastily I bought the ticket and even reached the airport. Checked in, but got a call at the airport again and was told to go back.”
What was the full story?
Sehwag added, “When the Indian team went to Sharjah for the Coca-Cola Cup, some players were injured. Then I got the call, but by the time I was about to board the plane, the players who were sick had recovered. The team management then asked me to stop.”
However, exactly one year later, Sehwag made his debut in the Indian team. He never looked back after that. In Tests, ODIs and T20 Internationals, he scored runs against the world’s fast bowlers with his explosive batting.
Sehwag made his ODI debut for India on April 1, 1999 against Pakistan in Mohali. He played 104 Tests, 251 ODIs and 19 T20 Internationals for India. He scored 8586 runs at an average of 49.34 in Tests. This included 23 centuries and 32 fifties. Also, he scored 8273 runs in ODIs with 15 centuries and 38 fifties at an average of 35.05. In addition, he contributed 394 runs in T20. (Former cricketer Virender Sehwag told how his debut was postponed due to a phone call)
