Senior Group National Rowing Championship from February 22 in Pune
With eight months left for the Hangzhou Asian Games this year, the 40th National Rowing Championships of the senior group will be held in Pune from February 22. The event will be held on the Army College of Engineering (CME) track and more than 500 athletes will participate.
This is the only rowing center in the country with international standard facilities, where competitors from 25 states are ready to showcase their skills. While giving more information in this regard, the Secretary of the Organization Colonel R. Ramakrishnan said, We are happy to host the tournament for the best players in the country. Such a course is prepared with all the facilities for all these quality players. Olympians, Asian and national champions will participate in the tournament.
Arjunlal Jat and Arvind Singh will be India’s main attraction at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. This was India’s first pair to reach the semi-finals in an Olympic event. After that, the same pair won the gold medal in the Asian Championship in Thailand last year. Apart from this, other Asian Championship medalists Sukhmeet Singh-Zakhar Khan (Double Sculls), Jasveer Sig, Iqbal Singh, Akshat Tanwar, Charanjit Singh (Lightweight Coxless Force), Jaswinder Singh, Bheem Singh, Punit Kumar, Ashish will also participate. are
National Rowing Federation General Secretary M. V. Sriram said, the performance of Indian players will be closely monitored on this route. For this we had already started preparation with 25-20 players. We expect good performances from India’s best players in this tournament. The national competition will be held over 2000m and 500m for men and women respectively.
The events for the men’s category include single sculls, double sculls, coxless doubles, coxless fours, (all in 2000m and 500m). Open double sculls and coxless fours and coxed eight will be held in 2000m only. Women’s single sculls, double sculls, coxless doubles, coxless fours (2000m, 500m), double sculls event (500m) and para men’s single sculls (200m, 500m) will also be held.
CME will be hosting the national championship for the fourth time on the track that was built in 2009. First national competition was held in 2014. After that, the 37th tournament was organized in 2018 and the 39th tournament in 2019. Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has given a financial award to this competition which is being held for the second year in a row.
