In early 2023, the PCB had formed the in-charge selection committee for the cricket team under the leadership of Shahid Afridi. According to Sethi, the chairman of this committee, Shahid Afridi, wanted to remove Pakistan’s captaincy from Babar Azam.

Shahid Afridi is a legendary all-rounder and former captain of the Pakistan cricket team. Earlier this year, the PCB had formed an in-charge selection committee under the leadership of Shahid Afridi. After becoming the chairman of the selection committee, Shaheen was going to take over the captaincy of Pakistan from Babar Azam. PCB Chairman Najam Sethi himself gave detailed information about this. The selection committee also included Abdul Razzaq, Iftikhar Anjum and Haroon Rashid.

On a YouTube channel, Najam Sethi said, “I have repeatedly said that I do not take decisions like changing the captaincy. I take advice from those whom I trust. When I took charge of the PCB, we had formed an in-charge selection committee. When the selectors took over, they said they wanted changes in the team. In this, the decision to relieve Babar Azam from the captaincy was also to be taken.”

But after Shahid Afridi accepted the responsibility, he decided that there is no need to change the captain. Sethi himself gave information about this in the interview. Meanwhile, Afridi stepped down as chief selector after Pakistan’s home series against New Zealand earlier in the year.
