The historic Test match between England and Australia was played at Lord’s Stadium. For the first time in history, a single cricket match was telecasted on TV.
England and Australia (England vs Australia) have already been bitter rivals in terms of cricket. Fans who watched this match on TV for the first time in 1938 were also very curious. Both teams contributed 100 percent to win this match. However, the result of the match was not final.
England set a huge target of 494 runs before Australia when they batted first. Captain Wally Hammond scored the highest innings of 240 runs. Apart from that, Eddie Painter contributed 99 runs. Australia also performed well and scored 422 runs in the first innings. After the end of the first innings, England team was leading by 72 runs. Bill Brown scored a double century for Australia. He scored 206 runs off 370 balls.
In the second innings of the match, England scored 242 for 8. In reply, Australia were set a target of 315 runs to win. But by the end of the fifth day’s play, the Australian team could only reach 204 runs for the loss of 6 wickets. Sir Don Bradman scored 102 runs in the second innings for the Australian team. It is said that the wickets of the Australian team survived only because of Bradman’s innings. (The first televised Test match was played at the @HomeOfCricket in 1938)
