Smith worried ahead of WTC finals as better bowlers sweat; Said, ‘Yes, I have tension…’
The much-awaited World Test Championship final between India and Australia will begin on Wednesday (June 7). This match will be played at England’s K Oval ground. However, Australia’s star batsman Steve Smith on Monday (June 5) expressed concern about the future of the five-day internationals. Growing franchise cricket around the world has put pressure on international matches. Small countries are not getting enough opportunity to play Test cricket against countries like India, Australia and England.
What did Smith say?
Steve Smith discusses the future of the five-day cricket format ahead of Test’s biggest WTC final. “Yes, I am a bit worried,” he said before the final against India. However, we hope that Test cricket will continue. I think it is in good shape right now. We have seen some great matches recently, so I think Test cricket in a traditional form is interesting. I hope it stays at the top of all the cricket boards and will continue to do so in the future.”
Talking further about the WTC final, Smith said he is hopeful that the Indian bowling attack will put up a good challenge. During the Test series in India not long ago, Australia’s preparations revolved around R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, but now they will also face fast bowlers like Mohammad Siraj and Mohammad Shami. “I think they have a good mix of fast bowlers,” Smith said. Shami and Siraj are India’s potential main fast bowlers, who possess superb skills. I think Duke ball will suit them.”
Speaking further, Smith said, “Of course their spinners will also challenge, who bowl well in any conditions. So I think their attack is good.” This is the first time that The Oval is hosting a Test match in June. Interestingly, Test matches have been played at this ground since 1880.
Grass was visible on the pitch on Monday, but hopefully it will be mowed before the start of the Test match. “I haven’t seen the pitch yet, so I can’t say much about it,” Smith said. However, you are right, it is usually a bit dry in summer. Especially the spinners can get some help to take the game forward.”
A shock to Australia
Australia took part in a long practice session on Monday and there were enough indications that Scott Boland will get a chance to replace pacer Josh Hazlewood. Apart from all-rounders Cameron Green, Mitchell Starc and skipper Pat Cummins, there will be a fourth option in fast bowling. (steve smith on future of test cricket ahead of wtc final 2023|)
