Smriti Mandhana’s Blue Team wins opener in women’s exhibition match, Shivali wins ‘POM’ award

The women’s exhibition match of the Maharashtra Premier League (MPL) started on Sunday (June 25). In the first match Blue team’s batsman Shivali Shinde’s unbeaten 35 runs helped Blue team win by 22 runs against Yellow team under Duckworth Lewis rules. Shivali Shinde won the player of the match award for his brilliant performance in this match.

In the women’s exhibition match, the first match of the tournament, which is going on at the stadium of Maharashtra Cricket Association in Gahunje, due to rain, the match between the two teams was played for 15 overs each. Team Yellow won the toss and decided to bowl first. Chinmayi Borpale of the Yellow team gave the first blow to the Blue team by catching Smriti Mandhana. Poonam Khemnar caught Smriti.

When the Blues were 57 for 1 in 7.3 overs, rain started again and the match was called off. Again due to rain interruption, the match between both the teams was played for 9 overs each. Earlier, Shivali Shinde scored an unbeaten 35 off 28 balls with 5 fours, while Rituja Deshmukh scored 23 runs off 21 balls with 2 fours. The pair put on a partnership of 56 runs off 43 balls for the second wicket. When play resumed after a rain break, Rituja dismissed Deshmukh. The Blue team scored 66 for 3 in 9 overs. But the Yellow team was given a revised target of 77 runs in 9 overs to win under the Duckworth Lewis rule.

The MCA Yellow team, who came down with the challenge of 77 runs from the Blue team, could manage only 54 runs for 4 in 9 overs. While captain Tejal Hasbanis was playing for 10 runs, Priyanka Garkhede of the Blue team struck a triple and gave the first blow to the Yellow team. After that, the fight given by Mukta Magre (16 runs), Isha Ghule (19 runs) was insufficient. Priyanka Garkhede (1-7), Maya Sonawane (1-8), Shweta Sawant (1-10), Shraddha Pokharkar (1-13) bowled well for the Blue team and the team won by 22 runs.
