Smriti ‘superflop’ in first WPL! Zero in batting and leadership in five matches
The Women’s Premier League, organized for the first time by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is almost halfway through its season. Of the five participating teams, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are the only team yet to register a win. Smriti Mandhana, the vice-captain of the Indian cricket team, is leading this team. While the team is failing, Smriti has also failed as a captain so far.
When the players’ auction was held for this tournament, RCB placed the highest bid of 3 crore 40 lakhs on Smriti and included her in their team. Along with this, she became the most expensive player in the tournament. Along with that, veteran players like Elise Perry, Heather Knight, Renuka Thakur, Richa Ghosh and Megan Shute were added to the team. However, the team could not register a win in the 5 matches played so far.
While Smriti was a complete failure as a captain, she also failed to shine as a batsman. She scored 35 runs in the first match against Delhi. After that, she scored 23 runs against Mumbai, but in both the matches, she could not maintain the expected pace of runs. She then managed to score 18 against Gujarat and only 4 against UP. Even in the fifth match against Delhi, she could not go beyond 8 runs. She has scored just 88 runs in these five matches at a paltry average of 17.6.
While other batsmen in the Indian team have been successful in making their mark throughout the tournament, Smriti’s failure has been glaring.
