Sri Lanka create history after clean sweep of Ireland, breaking India’s record 9 years ago

Ireland’s tour of Sri Lanka ends on Friday (April 28). Jaiman’s Sri Lankan side gave Ireland a clean sweep (2-0) in the two-match Test series. Losing both matches in the series, Ireland played the first match over three days and the second match over five days. Sri Lanka won the second match by an innings and 10 runs. However, along with this, a big record of the Indian team was also broken by the Sri Lankan team.

The second Test match between Sri Lanka and Ireland was played at the Galle Stadium. The match, which started on April 24, was decided on the last day. Ireland scored 492 runs in the first innings. In reply, the hosts Sri Lanka scored 704 runs in their first innings and took a huge lead of 212 runs. In the second innings, Ireland wanted to break this lead and build a big score. Ireland’s second innings was also wrapped up around 3pm on the final day. Ireland were bowled out for 202 in the second innings. As a result, the Sri Lankan team won by an innings and 10 runs.

India’s previous feat of winning by an innings despite the opposition putting up a huge first innings score. However, the Sri Lankan team broke this record on Friday. In 2016, the Indian team did this feat against England. England scored 477 runs in the first innings of this match. In reply, the Indian team won by an innings and 75 runs. In the match between Sri Lanka and Ireland, Ireland scored 492 runs in the first innings. In reply, Sri Lanka won by an innings.

Meanwhile, considering this match which was played at Galle Stadium, it was seen that the runs were literally raining. New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat first. Paul Stirling scored 103, Curtis Kampfer scored 111, Andy Balbirnie scored 95 and Warkan Tucker scored 80 in the first innings for Ireland. In reply, two players scored double centuries and two scored centuries for Sri Lanka. Nishan Madushka and Kusal Mendis scored 205 and 245 respectively.
