Qualifier matches for ICC ODI World Cup 2023 are currently being played. Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe, who reached the Super Six round, met on Sunday (July 2). In this match, Sri Lanka won by 9 wickets and confirmed that they will play in the ODI World Cup. Sri Lanka have won six out of six matches in the qualifiers.
Two teams each will be selected in the ODI qualifiers to actually play in the World Cup. Qualifier matches were played in two groups namely Group A and Group B. Sri Lanka team was in Group B. Sri Lanka, Scotland and Oman reached Super Six from Group B. Zimbabwe, Netherlands and West Indies from Group A were in the Super Six. Out of these, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe were ranked first and second respectively. Both the teams had won their first five matches in the qualifiers. Considering the overall score of this match between the two teams, Zimbabwe scored 165 runs in 32.2 overs while batting first. In reply, Sri Lanka scored 169 runs for the loss of one wicket in 33.1 overs to win. Sean Williams also played an important knock for Zimbabwe in this match. He contributed 56 runs off 57 balls. In reply, Sri Lankan opener Pathum Nisanka smashed an unbeaten 101 runs. Dimuth Karunaratne contributed 30 runs while Kusal Mendis contributed 25* runs.
The contribution of Sri Lanka’s bowling department remained crucial in the victory. Mahisha Thikshana took 4 wickets for 25 runs in 8.5 overs.
