Sri Lankan cricket again received a change of captain! Karunaratne’s hasty resignation

Currently, the Sri Lankan cricket team is on a tour of New Zealand. The second and final Test match of the tour ended on Monday (March 20). The host New Zealand won the match by an innings and 58 runs in Wellington. Sri Lanka also lost the first match of the series. After this clean sweep, the Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratne has decided to leave the leadership, and he has given the idea to the Sri Lankan Cricket Board.

Sri Lanka needed to win both these matches to enter the final of the World Test Championship. In the first match, Sri Lanka tried hard to win. However, they had to lose on the last ball of the fifth day. However, in the second match, the Sri Lankan team could not fight at all. As a result, the team suffered a heavy defeat by 1 innings and 58 runs. Taking responsibility for the defeat, Karunaratne announced that he was stepping down from the leadership of the team. he said,

“Taking responsibility for this defeat, I am resigning from the leadership. I will not captain the team after the upcoming Test series against Ireland. Sri Lanka will be gearing up for the next World Test Championship cycle under a new captain. I have conveyed my choice to the board and the selection committee and am awaiting their response.”

Although Karunaratne has announced his resignation, there is no response from the board yet. Sri Lanka will play a two-match Test series against Ireland in the upcoming period. The series will not be part of the World Test Championship. )
