Sri Lankan women’s voice is open! New Zealand’s Nangya Techat made history, captain Atapattu’s record century

New Zealand Women’s Cricket Team has toured Sri Lanka. In this tour, a series of 3 ODIs and 3 International T20 matches will be played between Sri Lanka Women vs New Zealand Women. The Sri Lankan team won the first ODI match of this series in a brilliant manner. Sri Lanka defeated New Zealand by 9 wickets in the first ODI. This is the first time in cricket history that a Sri Lankan team has defeated a New Zealand women’s team in any format. Sri Lankan women’s team had not been able to win against New Zealand in any form of cricket before.

The first ODI match between Sri Lanka Women vs New Zealand Women was played at the Galle ground. In this match, New Zealand team won the toss and decided to bat. This time due to rain interruption, this match was played for 28 overs only. The New Zealand team scored 170 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in the allotted 28 overs. This time Amelia Kerr contributed the most with 40 runs.

Defeated New Zealand for the first time
The Sri Lankan team made a strong start in chasing this challenge. Sri Lankan opener Chamari Athapaththu and Vishmi Gunaratne put on a 159-run partnership for the first wicket. Along with this, he took his team closer to victory. Captain Atapattu scored an unbeaten 108 runs. Also, Gunaratne was dismissed for 50 off 74 balls. Thus, Sri Lanka women’s team beat New Zealand for the first time in any form of cricket.

Captain Atapattu also created history in this historic victory. She became the first Sri Lankan woman cricketer to cross the 3000-run mark in ODI cricket. She did this feat in the 13th over of the innings. Along with this, she also scored her seventh ODI century. She scored an unbeaten 108 off 83 balls with 5 sixes and 10 fours.

Chamari Atapatu has played 93 ODI matches for Sri Lanka women’s team so far. In this she has scored 3059 runs at an average of 33.61. Interestingly, Atapattu is in superb form in 2023.
