Sri Lanka’s Khurda shot for just 78 runs! New Zealand start the ODI series with a resounding win

The first match of the ongoing ODI series between New Zealand and Sri Lanka was played on Saturday (March 25). Host New Zealand dominated the match played in Auckland. While defending the 274 runs set up by the batsmen, the bowlers reduced Sri Lanka’s innings to just 78 runs and gave the team a big victory by 198 runs. Fast bowler Henry Shipley took five wickets.

Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka won the toss and elected to bowl first. His first success came early in the form of Bo. Will Young and Finn Allen continued the innings of the team. Young returned with 26 runs. So, Allen celebrated a brilliant half-century. After that, the middle order and lower order batsmen kept the team’s score increasing. Daryl Mitchell scored 47, Glenn Phillips scored 39 and Rachin Ravindra scored 49 to help the team reach 274. Chamika Karunaratne top-scored with four wickets for Sri Lanka.

Chasing these runs, Sri Lanka’s innings did not recover from the start. Sri Lanka lost their first five batsmen for just 31 runs thanks to Shipley’s bowling. Experienced Angelo Mathews top scored for Sri Lanka with 18 runs. On the strength of Shipley’s five and Mitchell and Tickner’s two wickets each, Sri Lanka’s innings ended at 78 in 19.5 overs. Shipley, who took five wickets, was awarded the man of the match award. The second match of the series will be played on March 28. After the three-match ODI series, the T20 series will be played between the two teams.
