In a recent interview with Geo Cinema, Anil Kumble () was talking about this match against West Indies. Kumble had already told his wife Chetna that he was going to the field for bowling when he was injured. However, Chetna did not believe this and thought that Kumble was having fun. But then Kumble came straight into the field and took the crucial wicket of Brian Lara.

In the interview, Kumble said, “I remember till now, I was the only spinner in the playing eleven. I played the first two Test matches in Malika. I was dropped from the team after the first Test. I was coming back from injury. So I knew that it was my responsibility to help the team win. We had a chance. That is why I decided to take up bowling. I told my wife Chetna about it.”

Kumble added, “I told her that I knew I needed to go back home and have the surgery. But I am going to go out and bowl. I think at that point she thought I was having fun. Sachin Tendulkar was bowling when I went back to the dressing room. I was thinking then, if we take West Indies’ wickets early, we have a chance to win.”

Meanwhile, the Indian team could not win this match. The match was a draw. The host West Indies won the five-match Test series by a margin of 2-1.
