One such tragic incident took place 20 years ago on 23 March 2002. On that day, a mountain of grief fell on the England cricket team.

On 23 March 2002, the second Test match of the Test series was played between New Zealand and England in Wellington. When the captain Nasir Hussain went to the dressing room at lunch time in this match, he saw that all the players were sitting dumbfounded. At that time they received the news that Ben Holyoke had passed away. Today is Ben’s 20th death anniversary.

Ben Holyoake, who was born in Australia but later played for England, was named among the best all-rounders of the time. He died in a car accident at the age of 24. Holyoke’s car crashed into the wall of his childhood school in Perth. The entire cricket world was shocked by this incident. The accident took place when he was traveling in a car to attend a family function. He also became the first English player to die at the youngest age.

He made his first-class cricket debut in 1996. He took 4 wickets while playing for Yorkshire. Then at the age of just 19, he was given the opportunity to make his debut in the series against Australia. He scored 63 runs off 48 balls in the third match of this series. He also won the man of the match award.

Ben Holyoke played 20 ODIs for England. He scored 309 runs in this. Along with this, he also dismissed 8 wickets. Also, he could score only 44 runs in 2 Test matches. Along with this, he took 4 wickets. In 136 List A matches, he scored 2,481 runs and took 142 wickets. He excelled in first class cricket. He scored 2794 runs in 75 first class matches. This includes 3 centuries and 14 fifties.
