‘That’s when I thought my Test career was over…’ said the Australian opener after scoring a century

The historic Ashes Series 2023 between England and Australia (ENGvsAUS) began on Wednesday (June 16). The first match of the series is being played in the Edgbaston Test at Birmingham. In the first innings, England won the toss and elected to bat first and scored 393 runs. In reply, Australia’s first innings ended on 386 runs. Usman Khawaja scored 141 runs for Australia. Wicketkeeper Alex Carey scored 66, while Travis Head contributed 50 runs. Khawaja played 44 Test matches before returning to Test cricket in 2021. He himself had given up hope of a Test comeback and was content with his career.

Speaking about his return to Test cricket, Khawaja said, “Honestly, after playing 44 Tests, I thought the former Test career was over. I was happy because there are many players, who have not got the chance to play 44 Test matches. I had scored eight centuries. Was also part of the Ashes winning team. I won many series with the Australian team. So every match feels like a bonus when I get the chance to play again.”
